Greek philosopher Plato assumed that there were five basic elements. The different properties of these elements were believed to be the result of the geometric structure of these elements. The geometric underlying structures are called the *Platonic solids*. There exists five Platonic solids.

- earth: hexahedron
- water: icosahedron
- air: octahedron
- fire: tetrahedron
- ether: dodecahedron
